Grasslands of Epsom Established 1984

Searching for a reliable hedge cutting service in Surrey?

Overgrown, uneven or neglected hedges can quickly take over a garden, blocking light, encroaching on paths and losing the clean lines that make a garden look well cared for. Our hedge cutting service restores shape and health to every type of hedge, from formal box and privet borders to tall leylandii and mixed native screens.

Benefits

  • Neat, healthy hedges all year round
  • All cuttings and green waste cleared and removed
  • Cutting timed to protect nesting birds and encourage the healthiest regrowth
  • Safe working at height, with the right equipment for tall or wide hedges
  • One-off tidy-ups or a regular maintenance schedule, whichever suits you

How often does a hedge need cutting, and when?

How often a hedge needs cutting depends on the species and how formal you want it to look. Fast-growing conifer hedges such as leylandii are usually trimmed two to three times a year, in spring and again in mid-to-late summer, and should never be cut back into bare brown wood as they will not regrow from it. Privet and laurel are vigorous growers too and generally need two to three trims between May and September to stay dense and tidy.

Slower-growing formal hedges need less attention. Beech and hornbeam are usually cut once, in late August, which locks the dead leaves in place for winter screening. Box is best trimmed in May or June, and yew in late summer. Flowering hedges such as hawthorn are cut once after flowering, typically around July, to avoid losing the blossom.

We always work within the law as well as the calendar. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it’s an offence to damage or destroy the nest of a wild bird while it’s in use or being built, so we avoid cutting back hard into hedges during the main nesting season of March to August wherever birds may be nesting, favouring the safer windows of early autumn and light winter maintenance for anything beyond routine light trims.

Our hedge cutting process

We start with a free, no-obligation visit to assess your hedges, agree the shape and height you want, and check for signs of nesting birds before work begins. We then cut and shape the hedge with the right tools for its size, whether that’s hand shears for delicate or formal work, or powered trimmers and access equipment for taller screens. Every job finishes with a full clear-up: all cuttings, trimmings and green waste are removed from site, leaving your garden as tidy as we found it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should hedges be cut?

Most hedges benefit from one to three cuts a year depending on the species. Fast-growing conifer hedges like leylandii often need two to three trims between spring and late summer, while slower growers such as beech or box usually need just one seasonal cut to stay neat.

Is it safe to cut hedges during nesting season?

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it’s an offence to damage an active bird’s nest, so we avoid hard cutting back into hedges during the main nesting period of March to August wherever birds may be nesting, and prefer the safer windows of early autumn and light winter maintenance.

How long does a hedge cutting job take?

Most domestic hedge cutting jobs are completed within a single visit, usually a few hours depending on the length, height and condition of the hedge. Larger or heavily overgrown hedges may need a full day.

Do you clear away the cuttings and green waste?

Yes, every job includes a full clean-up. We remove all cuttings and green waste from site, so your garden is left clean and tidy with nothing for you to deal with afterwards.

Does cutting a hedge back hard damage it?

It depends on the species. Many hedges, such as privet and laurel, respond well to a harder cut and regrow strongly. Others, particularly conifers like leylandii, will not regrow from bare brown wood, so we tailor how hard we cut to what each species can safely take.

Can you cut tall or very overgrown hedges safely?

Yes, we have the right equipment, including access platforms and ladders where needed, to safely cut tall or badly overgrown hedges. We always assess the hedge first and agree the safest approach before starting work.

What's the difference between hedge trimming and hedge cutting?

Trimming is light, regular maintenance that keeps an already well-shaped hedge neat, while cutting can include more significant reshaping, height reduction or renovation of an overgrown hedge. We offer both and will recommend the right approach for your hedge.

Do you offer hedge cutting for commercial properties as well as gardens?

Yes, alongside residential gardens we provide hedge cutting for commercial properties, including offices, estates and public areas, as part of a regular grounds maintenance schedule or as a one-off tidy-up.
